The Cost Of Ignoring Your Inner Voice

The Cost Of Ignoring Your Inner Voice

Hey Queen, I see you there. I know there’s a quiet voice inside you that doesn’t shout outwardly. It doesn’t compete with the noise of responsibility, expectation, or logic — it whispers. Incessantly.

And for many women — especially queenagers, those navigating midlife, menopause, or the empty nest — that whisper which was easy to ignore whilst meeting the needs of your family. Yet those whispers can no longer be ignored or avoided.

The silence must cease. There must be expression.

Queen, ignoring your inner voice comes at a cost. Your inner voice isn’t always loud, but it is persistent. That voice is not always immediate, but avoiding those words does have an accumulative effect that is not positive.

Ignoring or shoving the voice down under the carpet and into the silent void shows up in your body as restlessness. Avoidance of your internal dialogue creates disconnection from the most intimate part of your loving self — your heart.

Perhaps you have a sense that your life looks “fine” on the outside but I’ll bet that your life during the shift feels off on the inside.

Is There A Hidden Cost?

As a therapist with 20 years of experience, I can reassure you that when you override your inner voice long enough, your nervous system begins to speak for you. This reaction is rooted in your subconscious and will activate any time you feel unsafe.

The science behind the Polyvagal Theory explains that your brain is constantly scanning for safety through a process called neuroception. When you suppress your truth, your nervous system can interpret that as a lack of safety.

When your nervous system misperceives avoided life as ‘unsafe’ and you may experience the following symptoms:

  • Chronic tension or inexplicable fatigue
  • Anxiety without clear cause or trigger
  • Emotional reactivity or numbness
  • A loss of direction or identity

This isn’t you being “lost”, this is your body responding to misalignment between your head and your heart.

Why Does This Intensify In Your Midlife?

For Queenagers — women in perimenopause, menopause, or transitioning into empty nest life — the cost of ignoring your voice is amplified by the loss of oestrogen.

It’s all about biology.

Oestrogen doesn’t just regulate your ability to reproduce — it also impacts your mood, your capacity to emotionally regulate, and your ability to prioritise others with ease.

Oestrogen is your hormonal ‘good girl’ mask.

For decades, oestrogen has acted like a social smoothing agent, supporting your nurturing behaviours and external focus. However, as your oestrogen levels decline:

  • Your tolerance for misalignment decreases
  • Your desire to people-please diminishes
  • Your internal voice becomes louder, clearer, harder to ignore

Queen, this isn’t dysfunction; your menopausal shift has brought you the chance to recalibrate. So when you’ve become accustomed to not expressing yourself, your ability to reset is stifled.

Your nervous system will struggle to sustain a life that isn’t true.

Queen, Your Shift Story Is Not Your Limitation

It’s your hormonal invitation to reinvent your power.

Your past experiences formulate a story. Your story has been filtered by your beliefs and your hormonal mask.

Here’s the deepest secret of your story — your truths are not fixed. As your oestrogen declines, so too does the mask of perception. Your powers of reflection amplify and you see your story differently.

From a neuroscience perspective, your brain is wired through neuroplasticity — meaning your thoughts, patterns, and emotional responses can change.

What you’ve repeated becomes familiar. What’s familiar feels true. Therefore, your story is simply a pattern of repetition. What if your estrogen mask caused you to mis-perceive the signals from your heart?

So if your story has been:

  • “I have to hold everything together”
  • “It’s too late for me to change”
  • “I need to be who others expect me to be”

Then your nervous system has learned to reinforce identity created by the ‘good girl’ mask, rather than your heart.

The menopausal shift brings about awareness that your story isn’t your cage. It’s simply your raw material to become rewired into your truth of who you really are.

Queen your shift is the invitation to rewrite your narrative

Transformation doesn’t come from rejecting your past. Your shift gifts you the skill of reflection to reinterpret your story.

Instead of asking: “Why did this happen to me?”

I want you to become curious and ask yourself the following — “What did this shape in me?”

Take a breath and allow that curiosity to observe your stories. The shift brings about a timing of reflective discernment of where you have prioritized yourself, or where your advocacy for others overtook your needs.

This isn’t failure Queen, it’s your resilience that carried you through those moments.

The newfound recalibration of your truth is more than awareness; it’s a deeper activation of your ability to discern your intuitive signals. And this is where your strength and power lie — your connection to your inner voice

What feels like menopausal shift side effects are actually your assets on display. You’re simply sweating off the dross and allowing the queen to shine.

Here Are Five Practical Mindset & Energetic Tools

Learning to lower your mask, and reflection on your story can feel incredibly foreign and often uncomfortable. So let’s install some safety into your practice before you allow your voice to really roar. Here are some real, grounded actions that I’ve utilised myself and share with my clinical clients and audience.

1. Awareness Before Change

Do yourself a favour, Queen, and give yourself permission to pause, take a breath, and simply notice when your inner voice speaks. More importantly, allow yourself to reflect on those moments you override it.

A component of permission is the recognition that the moment your override your voice, is actually a moment of disconnection from your heart. Do not judge this, simply observe the pattern.

2. Regulate Before You Rewrite

It’s a biological and psychological fact, that you can’t shift anything when you’re in a dysregulated state. Your priority to be able to activate change and find your voice, is to first address all the discomfort of the fading mask.

Remember when you are feeling discomfort, that is signalling to your nervous system that you don’t feel safe. So practice supporting your nervous system through:

  • Slow, conscious breathing
  • Time in stillness (yes get bored!)
  • Gentle movement to allow stuck emotions to flow

Safety in the body creates flexibility in the mind.

4. Future Self Anchoring

Queen, how often do you gift yourself moments to visualise the version of you who does trust her inner voice? I wonder what sensations you could generate when connecting and anchoring to your future self?

Don’t stop at the vision of the future version of you. Take it another step further and challenge yourself to embody the sensations you might experience. When you move beyond visualisation to felt experience, you are programming your body to feel your future!

Take it another step further. I wonder how that desired version of you feels to proactively make decisions? And how delicious would it feel to not second guess yourself?

Queen, I wonder if you were trusting your inner voice, what would you no longer tolerate?

When you actively connect to the positive felt sensations, you are mapping your brain to map toward that desired identity.

5. Energetic Alignment

Queen, your inner voice is not just psychological — it’s energetic. You see, when you act in alignment, you connect with your Queen, your truth and live your wisdom. Your vibrational energy increases. Your intuitive clarity sharpens. Your self-confidence stabilises

Alignment to your truth creates efficiency. Misalignment generates exhaustion.

Conclusion

Ignoring your inner voice doesn’t make it disappear, but it does make you feel stifled and stuck.

There will come a day when you realise the discomfort you’ve been avoiding… is actually your guidance system trying to lead you somewhere truer.

This season of life — whether you’re a queenager, navigating menopause, or standing in the quiet after raising a family — is not an ending.

Your shift is an invitation to listen, recalibrate and become — your whole truth. Your story is not the reason you’re stuck. It’s the reason you’re ready.

How To Beat Sunday Scaries

How To Beat Sunday Scaries

Three strategies to overcome dread and avoidance of a new week

Does this happen to you? You have a ripper weekend, jam-packed with adventure(s), excitement and joy bubbles, only to arrive at your Sunday afternoon and then, meh?

Does the arrival of Sunday night generate a sensation of reluctance, anxiety or even dread?

My clients tell me they dread Sundays and Monday mornings. Their complaints mirror that of mild allergic reactions! They report overthinking all the things. They overanalyse tasks or encounters. They tell me they experience shortness of breath with their panic!

Let’s combat that crap because next week isn’t here yet!

I was listening to Mel Robbins on an Instagram live the other day and she referred to this feeling as the Sunday Scaries! It’s an appropriate reference when you think about it.

Of course, we would all love to have longer weekends and sloth our lives away. But if you’re anything like me you’d soon get bored and seek creative stimulation.

Here are three things you can do to release, delete and let go of the Sunday scaries

Let go of expectations of what will happen this coming week.

This type of thought process is based on the future-based time reference. You can’t change what hasn’t happened yet. Additionally, when we have negative thoughts about the future, it’s often linked to a fear of something unknown, unforeseen, or uncertain.

You don’t want to be entertaining negative thoughts. You certainly don’t want to be investing your mental energy and accidentally intending an experience you fear!

Let go of expecting you will complete everything on your to-do list.

As one overachiever talking to another, let’s get this fact out in the open. It’s virtually impossible to tick everything off your to-do list. There I said it and the world didn’t implode!

If you’re getting ready to argue with me, let me ask you these qualifying questions

Just how hard would you have to flog yourself in order to get everything done?

  • What do you really gain by ticking everything off the list this week other than fatigue?
  • What do you fear happening if you don’t finish?
  • Will you likely shame yourself or be unkind, or worse feel like a failure if you don’t finish?
  • And frankly, why would you want to insert yourself into such a state of stress that you’re half dead once you’re finished??

Perhaps instead you could start to ask yourself, what could I do right now in this moment and stick with that single task until it’s finished?

Maybe you could tackle the hardest thing on your list? Perhaps you could smash out all the easy tiny things first?

Pick one strategy and try it this week.

Create a positive mindset and focus on how you want to feel at the end of next week.

Take a few moments to picture in your mind what you want to feel and allow your imagination to create the sensory experience of how you will look, feel, hear or even taste Friday afternoon.

I invite you to activate your imagination and ask yourself the following:

  • How might that feel in your body?
  • What might you see (perhaps yourself ticking off all the things on your list)?
  • What could you see yourself doing if you felt like you accomplished something rather than just surviving another week?

You can choose a calm approach to the week ahead. This choice shifts your mindset from a negative outlook to a positive one.

When you choose a calm approach you are creating opportunities to go with the flow and achieve more than you ever expected. When you are calm you can focus more readily on the task at hand.

When you are calm, your thoughts are clear and often concise. You tend not to wander off on tangents or get distracted. The problem-solving parts of your brain remain in solution orientation rather than survival.

This type of calm mindset allows you to be kind to yourself and slow down enough to listen to your body’s signals — when do you need to do more or perhaps when do you need to slow down and rest?

Resting isn’t a sign of weakness. You’re preparing the body and the mind to reset and recharge and become ready once more for another round of life experiences!
