Cancer Caregiver Advocacy

Cancer doesn’t happen to one person. It ripples through partners, families, friends, colleagues and the people quietly holding everything together behind the scenes.

Having experienced breast cancer herself, Karen witnessed how profoundly a cancer experience affected the people around her. As someone others normally relied on, she also experienced what happens when her capacity was depleted; there was nothing left in the tank to keep meeting everyone else’s needs.

This experience became part of the inspiration for Holding the Helper, Karen’s work advocating for greater recognition of the emotional, physical and nervous system impact of cancer caregiving.

Karen speaks about caregiver burnout, cancer trauma, helper fatigue, nervous system regulation and the importance of supporting the support crew alongside the patient.

Books by Karen Humphries

Karen’s books bring together lived experience, therapeutic insight and practical tools designed to help people navigate significant life challenges.

This Is My Roar-Tame Your Trauma Tale draws on Karen’s lived experience of breast cancer. She explores how the nervous system responds when life suddenly feels unsafe. Through the relatable metaphors of the meerkat and the mountain lion, Karen translates complex trauma and survival responses into everyday language, helping readers recognise what happens within the body when our internal alarm system detects threat, and how greater awareness can support regulation, recovery and change.

Holding the Helper – Supporting The Cancer Caregiver turns the lens towards the often invisible people beside the patient: the partners, family members, friends and carers who become the support crew. It explores the impact of caregiving across diagnosis, treatment and recovery, with practical strategies to recognise stress, regulate the nervous system and support the person behind the helper role.

Together, the books reflect Karen’s broader philosophy that change is not about pretending difficult experiences haven’t happened. It is about developing the awareness, tools and support to navigate what comes next.
